Nothing profound here, just a great tip from an aspiring domestic goddess that has long been hung up her love/hate relationship with the dishwasher. I can’t bring myself to rinse well, then wash in the dishwasher. In the arid West it seems a great waste of water. However, without rinsing, the dishes will only come clean if I use the mainstream dishwashing detergents, which I have learned are one of the most toxic cleaning products in our homes. (One source listed it second to only draincleaner!) The idea of washing our dishes with poison just doesn’t sit well. We have been hand washing for several weeks, until I found a recipe for a simple, mild, and homemade solution. I tried it a few days ago and it works BETTER than any store bought dishwashing detergent we have ever used! This is how simple it is:
Equal parts borax and washing soda. Add some essential oils if you like yummy smells. I used orange oil.
Yep, that’s it.
Put vinegar in the rinse compartment and you’ll have sparkling dishes. So whether it is money savings, the environment, your health, or just the principal of not buying an over marketed product that we really don’t need, give it a try! I bet you’ll be impressed.
